The HC and HF-series pickups are Tom Anderson's response to customers seeking a more vintage voiced pickup. If you start with the wide frequency band of the H-series pickups, then taper off the lows and highs, you get the HC/HF pickup. They have a strong emphasis on the midrange frequencies and the higher in number you go with the HC/HF pickups, the more mids you will hear. So the HC/HF1- represents the least amount of mids along with the lowest output, while the HC/HF3+ has the most amount of mids and the highest output. The only difference between the HC and HF pickups is the HC has a metal cover over the coils and the HF has exposed black coils.
The HF1- is very clear with smooth highs and tight bass, so it's not harsh or boomy. It's a great option if you are looking for vintage, low-output tones from a neck humbucker. Plus, it splits really well!
